This new institute, at the Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine, launched in summer 2025 and aims to address one of the grand challenges of our time: engineering AI so that it benefits society, while mitigating its risks. It takes a socio-technical approach and brings together a large inter-disciplinary team including faculty from engineering and computer science, as well as partners from social sciences, law/policy, and the arts.
This is the second of three interdisciplinary “E+” institutes in the Samueli School of Engineering, funded as part of a generous gift from Susan and Henry Samueli, within the “Engineering+Society” theme, and focusing on “Engineering AI for Society” (or “ProperAI” for short) for the period 2025-2030.

Samueli School’s Engineering+ Society Institute to Focus on AI
Samueli School Dean Magnus Egerstedt announced that the Engineering+ Society Institute will focus on “Engineering AI for Society” with Athina Markopoulou as the institute’s inaugural director.
